Case Study
In 2005 A. H. Allen was commissioned to carry out an asbestos survey inside a large motor hall belonging to a national utility company. This survey identified the presence of a number of asbestos materials both in situ and as a wide spread contaminant following an accident which damaged asbestos sprayed coating applied to the ceiling of the structure. Free contamination and the damaged asbestos coating meant removal and full environmental clean were the only option and subsequently A. H. Allen was contracted to manage the entire project from start to finish.
This involved the identification and specification of the remedial works required, the tendering out of the remedial work to HSE licensed contractors, the selection of the contractors undertaking the removal and overseeing the project as principal contractor in accordance with the Construction Design & Management (CDM) Regulations.
Due to ongoing operations and complexities in the sites structure the project had to be planned to allow round the clock access and uninterrupted production. This involved A. H. Allen establishing procedures with both the client and their service partners during the life of the project to allow access to crucial parts of the site at all times. One aspect of this was to provide a 24 hour call out service where A. H. Allen field staff could be called upon to allow access to the site for emergency works.
The project involved the large scale decontamination of the inside of the motor hall and associated areas, including those areas critical to uninterrupted production, as well as supervising the removal of a large sprayed asbestos coating. Although generally thought of as the most complex of all asbestos removal activities, with careful planning, management and cooperation between all parties the project was completed on time and within budget.
